Caffeinated Choruses

I don’t know about you, but for me, music is just as powerful as caffeine. My addiction to coffee began during the second semester of junior year, and while it began as the fuel to carry out far too many tasks, it has become something I savor and treasure. Just the same, junior year was the cause for my listening to 48,273 minutes of music. And now, unless I want to spend the entire day a disgusting, groggy mess, I need my caffeine: an iced oat milk latte and my “good morning” playlist.
So here are my wake-up songs and what I associate with each:
The song opens with an iconic whistle that doesn’t only fill me with the hope of a new day but reminds me of probably my favorite television series. The pilot episode of Gossip Girl begins with this iconic song as Serena Van Der Woodsen enters Grand Central Station. Since then, I’ve associated the song with new opportunities, new beginnings, and the buzzing energy of New York City I wish to feel every morning.
The song itself narrates the story of two people who feel burnt out with relationships, but meet someone new and give love a second chance. Personally, I can’t imagine waking up any other way than with the enchantment of something new.
Now, some people experience synesthesia, a sensory crossover that allows people to taste colors and see sounds. Well, I think I may experience fashion synesthesia, as I associate plenty of songs with distinct outfits, so this is the vibe and outfit I see every morning when I listen to Peter Bjorn and John’s “Young Folks”.

Recently, another of Natasha Bedingfield’s songs has been getting its fair share of recognition: “Unwritten”. The anthem has cycled in its popularity with Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell’s “Anyone But You” Shakespeare adjacent RomCom. While I love the song and will sing it with windows rolled down, my favorite Natasha Bedingfield song is “Pocketful of Sunshine”.
I mean, not only is the rhythm drug-like and dance-inducing, but the lyrics are exactly what I want to hear at 7:00 am:
I got a love and I know that it's all mine, oh, oh-oh
Do what you want but you're never gonna break me
Sticks and stones are never gonna shake me, oh, oh-oh
…
The sun is on my side
And takes me for a ride
I smile up to the sky
I know I'll be alright
The song is practically one really long positive affirmation! It’s made for mornings, and you can’t tell me otherwise. Just the same, here’s the vibe and outfit that leaks from the speakers when I listen to this song:

Ok, this might be my favorite “good morning” song, and that’s saying a lot. And the fact is strictly attributed to the soundtrack of one of my favorite movies: The Devil Wears Prada.
The movie opens with a montage of girls working at Runway (fictional Vogue) getting ready for their oh-so-fashionable day. They put on their lipstick and walk through life with high heels and coffee. While the movie is a cautionary tale, I’d take Andy’s job in a heartbeat, because while the industry might not seem meaningful to some, it’s what I want to be, and it really does mean so much to me.
Of course, the lyrics below apply to just about any job or goal. If I could pack these lyrics into a pill and sell them as motivational drugs, I would. But anyway, here’s the vibe and outfit:
Suddenly I see (suddenly I see)
This is what I wanna be
Suddenly I see (suddenly I see)
Why the hell it means so much to me
(Suddenly I see)
This is what I wanna be
Suddenly I see (suddenly I see)
Why the hell it means so much to me, oh-oh

Well, I encourage you to give these songs a listen tomorrow morning (click here for my full: good morning playlist). While they might not replace a good cup of coffee, perhaps they’ll make your day just that much better. You’ve been warned though, they’re addictive.
Love,
a melomaniac
